Counterproductive Work Behaviors: The Hidden Cost of Silence

Not all problems at work are loud.

Sometimes, they show up as small actions that slowly hurt the team, like ignoring tasks, spreading gossip, coming late on purpose, or refusing to cooperate.

These are called Counterproductive Work Behaviors (CWBs).

CWBs cost more than productivity. They erode trust, morale, and psychological safety. They’re not mistakes. They are signs that something deeper is wrong.

Why do people act this way?

  • They feel unfairly treated
  • They don’t feel valued or heard
  • They’re burned out or frustrated
  • They’ve stopped trusting the system

As leaders and teammates, we need to notice these signs, not punish them, but understand them.

Let’s ask:

  • What’s causing this behavior?
  • What can we do to fix the root issue?
  • How can we build a culture where people feel safe, respected, and motivated?

Because ignoring small problems today can lead to big damage tomorrow.
